There are many different benefits to using native trees in your yard. They require less water and maintenance than non-native plants because they are already adapted to the land’s soil and weather. Native trees also helps to sustain other native plants and animals in the area. Cities such as San Antonio, Bulverde, Helotes, and Converse have some unique, beautiful trees that are native to the area. Here are just a couple that you can plant into your yard and improve your garden.

Virginia Live Oak
Southern Live Oak – Quercus virginiana

The Southern Live Oak is a iconic tree in the south. Living in San Antonio, you should recognized the Live Oak at The Alamo that was planted over a century ago. Known for its short, stout trunk and long wide spreading branches. The Southern Live oak is eastern to Southeastern US and grows wild near the Gulf of Mexico. This tree is admired for its wind firmness and its adaptability to almost any soil condition. Southern Live Oaks are perfect shade trees and are able to withstand fires, floods, and hurricanes.

Mexican Buckeye

Ungnadia speciosa

The Mexican Buckeye Tree is native to Texas and is found mostly West of the Brazos River in South and Central Texas. This tree does better with partial-shade but can handle direct sun with enough water. When the spring comes around, the flowers blooms are beautiful, adding a nice touch of pink to any garden or yard. However, parents and pet owners be cautious. The tree’s shiny black seeds are toxic if eaten.
