Fall (Sep-Nov)
Every garden requires careful maintenance to thrive and grow strong. The property owner needs to make sure the garden provides the right environment. Here you will find some tips for your garden Fall Season in San Antonio, Texas.
Planting
- Late September and early October is the perfect time to divide and replant spring perennials. Plants like yarrow, daylilies, iris, daisies, etc, need attention during this time.
- Early September is the time to plant fall-color plants like chrysanthemums, petunias, asters, marigolds, etc, to ensure your garden has the right fall aesthetic.
- This is a good time to sow wildflower seeds. Make sure they’re pressed into the soil for proper germination.
- Overseed established fescue lawns or plant new ones just in time for the growing season. This should be done by mid-October and before the weather is too cold.
- Plant winter weather fruits and vegetables like bush English and snap peas, beets, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cilantro, leaf lettuce, collards, bush lima beans, parsley, onion seeds, spinach, radishes, and turnips, etc, for the fall harvest.
- Plant daffodils between late October and mid-November. Choose trees and shrubs specifically selected for fall foliage. Late October is a good time to plant perennials.
Pruning
- Don’t prune spring-flowering plants during the fall as that might have an impact on their blooms during spring.
- Cut spent and dried flowers in annuals and perennials carefully to encourage growth and fall blooming.
- Prune dead branches and wood from trees and shrubs but don’t go overboard. Wait until the trees are dormant until you do any major reshaping.
- Start pruning evergreen trees at the end of fall to minimize the surface area and limit ice damage during the winter.
- Start cutting back dormant perennials like salvia and lantana before the first freeze of the season.
- Trim tropical plants after the foliage freezes and start reshaping the plants after they have gone dormant during the first freeze.
Caring for plants
- Test the soil to see if the warm season grass requires more fertilization. If it does, fertilize it for the last time before fall truly sets in.
- Add pre-emergent herbicide to the lawn or garden to control cool season grassy weed and broadleaf winter weeds. This should be applied by the end of September.
- Use a fungicide to control mildew and black spot. Look for borers, webworms, and other such pests.
- Keep an eye out for scale insects on ornamental plants.
- Fertilize established fescue lawns to encourage growth and promote resilience.
- Bring all tropical plants and houseplants inside as the weather starts to cool.
- Gather and mulch leaves regularly and keep the lawn clean. This discourages pests and other such problems.
